BMKG Warns of Extreme Weather Throughout the Week

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warned of possible extreme weather conditions over several Indonesian regions throughout the upcoming week.
"Beware of potential rainstorm in May across a number of regions," said BMKG Deputy Mulyono R Prabowo in a written statement Tempo received on Thursday, April 25, 2019.
The agency explained that it would mostly be caused by the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) natural phenomenon that has entered its wet phase, which will be quite significant next week. This condition increases the supply of moist mass over Indonesian regions.
The weather anomaly is identified over the Sulawesi Sea, Makassar Strait, West Kalimantan, and North Kalimantan's South China Sea, and clashing over the western and central part of Indonesia.
The agency also warned of high tides measuring 2.5 to 4 meters from April 25 until May 2, 2019, in waters at Aceh, Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra's Indian Ocean, up to the Pacific Ocean near North Papua.
